He carries the stories of families who have faced winters afraid the heat will be shut off or that the next utility bill will be more than they can manage.
That is why every solar installer training at Red Cloud Renewable ends with a community install for a family in need.
When solar goes onto a home, it brings warmth, safety, and a little more peace of mind to people who have carried too heavy a burden for too long.
This award also speaks to Henry’s lifelong commitment to energy sovereignty.
Reservations are called sovereign nations, yet many Native families still live at the mercy of outside utilities and rising energy costs.
From the beginning, his vision has been to return real power to Indigenous communities, so Native nations can shape their own energy future.
Through Red Cloud Renewable, he has welcomed Native learners from many tribal nations, trained them in solar and clean energy, and sent them home with skills that bring jobs, opportunity, and affordable power to their own people.
None of this has happened alone.
You have walked this road with us.
When you chose to support Red Cloud Renewable, you helped keep Elders warm, helped young Native people gain tools and purpose, and helped make it possible for Henry to live out his calling to serve his people and share this vision across Indian Country.
So when he receives the Dr. Espanola Jackson Energy Justice Award, your belief, generosity, and prayers are part of that moment. She filled out application after application, hoping to build a life close to home, close to her family, close to her people.

Then one day, she saw an ad for our BRIDGE Program — a solar training program created specifically for Native American women. She took a leap of faith. And it changed everything.

From day one, Keva felt what it meant to be truly supported: meals covered, childcare covered, gas vouchers, lodging, tools — all the things that make opportunity possible for Native women who are often carrying more than their share.

But something even more powerful happened. Keva didn’t just learn solar. She found her voice. She found direction. She found a future she could claim with both hands.

After graduating, she traveled the country installing solar — Oregon one week, Arizona the next. She saw Mount Shasta, the Redwoods, Lake Tahoe, Hoover Dam… and she said it felt like the best road trip of her life.

And then she came home. Not because she ran out of opportunities — but because she wanted to bring opportunity back to Pine Ridge.

Today, Keva is part of our Sustainable Building Crew, helping construct energy-efficient homes built by Native hands, for Native families. She still talks about one homeowner who stood on-site watching his foundation being poured, already imagining what each room would become.

“That’s when I knew,” she said. “We’re not just building a home — we’re building a legacy.”

This is what your Giving Tuesday gift does.
• It trains Native women.
• It creates Native-led careers.
• It builds homes for families who need them.
• It strengthens sovereignty, one person at a time.

This Giving Tuesday… will you help more women like Keva?

Will you help create more first jobs, more second chances, more road trips, more homecomings, more moments where a Native woman stands proudly in a hard hat knowing she is building the future of her people?

Your gift today directly supports training, childcare, tools, safety gear, lodging, and food — all the things that make success possible for our next cohort of women.

From all of us at Red Cloud Renewable — thank you for believing in Native women, in sovereignty, and in the possibility of a brighter future powered by Native hands.

28.11.2025
Donations for Red Cloud Renewable Center
One Donation – Three Impacts
Thank you so much Henry Red Cloud

04.11.2025
Warming Homes, Empowering People: The Start of Energy Sovereignty Training

Winters in South Dakota are unforgiving. Temperatures can plunge far below zero, and the wind sweeps across the plains with a force that seeps through the walls of homes not built to withstand it.
On reservations like Pine Ridge — and countless others across the country — too many families face these brutal months with little insulation, old windows, and furnaces that barely hold on. The result is not just discomfort, but danger.

That’s why Red Cloud Renewable launched its first-ever Energy Sovereignty Training — a program rooted in the belief that no one should have to choose between freezing and affording heat. This initiative trains tribal members to perform critical weatherization work: sealing homes, improving insulation, replacing inefficient systems, and teaching energy-saving practices that make homes safer, warmer, and more affordable to maintain.

But the impact reaches far beyond the homes themselves. Each participant is gaining certifications, career-ready skills, and the confidence to build a better future — not only for their own families, but for their entire community. They are becoming the next generation of energy warriors, leading the way toward a future where Native communities control their own comfort, cost, and climate resilience.
At Red Cloud Renewable, we believe energy sovereignty is more than just power — it’s warmth, dignity, and the right to thrive through every season.

Thank you for your belief in our work. Sovereignty to Energy Sovereignty
For the Oglala Lakota, the story of resilience is deeply tied to the name Red Cloud.
In the 19th century, Chief Mahpiya Luta — known to history as Chief Red Cloud —
led his people through one of the most defining chapters in Lakota history.
A fierce defender of his homeland, Red Cloud fought against the expansion of the Bozeman Trail through sacred Lakota territory, protecting his people’s way of life.

His leadership ultimately forced the U.S. government to sign the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868,
making him one of the only Native leaders to win a war against the U.S.
Army and secure peace on his terms.
But even with that victory, the decades that followed brought unimaginable challenges.

Broken treaties, the reservation system, and forced assimilation policies stripped
Native Nations of their land, resources, and self-sufficiency.
Communities that had lived in balance with the earth for thousands of years
were made dependent on outside systems for survival —
from food and housing to water and power.
That loss of sovereignty didn’t just happen through land — it extended to energy,
economy and opportunity.
Generations later, many reservations, including Pine Ridge,
would be left in energy poverty — where high utility costs, aging infrastructure
and unreliable power made it nearly impossible for families to live sustainably.
And that’s where Chief Henry Red Cloud stepped in.

A New Kind of Sovereignty
As the fifth-generation direct descendant of Mahpiya Luta, Chief Henry Red Cloud carries forward the same mission his ancestor once fought for — but in a modern form: energy sovereignty. Through his leadership of Red Cloud Renewable, Henry has spent decades helping Native communities regain control over their power — literally and figuratively. His vision is rooted in one idea: that true sovereignty means being able to sustain your people, your land, and your future without dependence on outside systems.

By training hundreds of Native students in solar energy, weatherization, and sustainable construction, Henry and his team are helping tribal nations return to a state of self-reliance — one that honors traditional values through modern tools. Every solar panel installed is a statement of independence. Every student trained is another link in the unbroken chain of resilience.

The Next Generation of Leadership
That legacy now continues through Henry’s son, John Red Cloud, who serves as Director of Operations at Red Cloud Renewable. John represents the next generation of leadership — one that bridges traditional knowledge with innovation, ensuring that the work started by his ancestors continues to grow.

Carrying that same fire forward are Silas Red Cloud and Jack Red Cloud, both full-time Solar Educators at Red Cloud Renewable.
Silas, Henry’s son, has completed multiple solar certifications of his own and now dedicates his time to teaching new cohorts of students — helping them gain the skills to bring sustainable power back to their own communities.
Jack, Henry’s nephew, shares that same mission — mentoring students, leading hands-on solar installations, and helping ensure that energy knowledge stays in Indigenous hands. Together,
the Red Clouds are not only preserving their family’s legacy — they’re multiplying it.
Their collective leadership shows that energy independence is cultural resilience in action.
It’s the modern expression of the Lakota way of life: living in balance with the land, protecting future generations, and standing strong in self-sufficiency.
Wóphila tȟáŋka — we thank you.
Thank you for your belief in our work, Henry & Gloria Red Cloud

B.R.I.D.G.E Programm – Solar Warrior Woman

He teaches a „New Way to Honor the Old Ways“ to students from more than 50 tribes across the Northern Plains and far beyond.
Over the last two years he prepared himself through four phases of preparation to take on more responsibility and his efforts culminated this last weekend when more than 100 people gathered at Bear Butte, the sacred vision quest area and participated in his „Making of a Chief Ceremony“.
The Ceremony was organized by Lula Red Cloud
, the Matriarch and oldest woman of the Red Cloud family as well as other members of the Red Cloud family. Leonard Crow Dog, the great spiritual leader of the Lakota led the ceremony. Chief John Spotted Tail, Chief of the Sicangu Lakota Oyate, the direct descendant of the legendary Chief Spotted Tail, placed the bonnet upon Henry’s head. Ivan Looking Horse was the Eyapaha (ceremony moderator) and Tamra Stands and Looks Back-Spotted Tail made the bonnet and was a major organizer and supporter of this historical event.
For more information on Henry Red Cloud – visit his website https://www.redcloudrenewable.org/…

KILI Radio Gains Energy Independence!

KILI Radio, „The Voice of the Lakota Nation“ — an independent radio station funded entirely by donations from global listeners, gains energy independence. He returned to Pine Ridge in the late 1990s with a fresh perspective on the plight of his home community and was inspired to volunteer his time to work on sustainable home building, solar energy, and wind turbine projects. He soon began to manufacture solar heaters on his own using his mechanical and engineering skills and realized that he could train and hire local community members to help bring sustainable living to more families and communities.
Thus, Lakota Solar Enterprises was born– a 100% Native owned and operated renewable energy company that establishes family-scale solar heating systems on reservations. Out of this company grew the Red Cloud Renewable Energy Center, a Native educational facility funded by private donations and public funding, where not only citizens of Pine Ridge, but tribal leaders from far and wide, come to learn the skills necessary to obtain green energy jobs, bring energy solutions to their own communities, and even start their own businesses.
They take that knowledge back to their own communities, where its benefits are paid forward, increasing exponentially as it is shared. Henry’s accomplishments have not gone unnoticed; during the past ten years he has earned many awards, both national and international, including a Solve fellowship from MIT (2018) and recognition by the White House as a Champion of Change.
While Henry’s work has given so many communities the ability to improve their tangible quality of life, he has done so in a way that enriches the spirit of these communities, restoring and strengthening cultural pride.
He reminds tribes that a return to their traditional relationship with Mother Earth, which has always been respectful and sustainable, can serve them well in addressing modern problems. He shows by his example that the success of an enterprise cannot merely be measured by financial gains: instead, a greater measure can be its uplifting, sustaining effect on others. Inspired by his ancestors and his grandchildren, he teaches that we can learn from the wisdom and experience of those who have gone before, giving hope and purpose, strength and inspiration, in turn to succeeding generations.
In recognition of his exemplary work and mission, and of the vision and model that he provides for leaders, communities, and individuals everywhere, Washington College is pleased to honor him with the honorary degree, Doctor of Public Service.

nov. 19, 2019

Henry Red Cloud, of Pine Ridge, is providing a clean,
sustainable future to Native Americans across America
PINE RIDGE, S.D.– Henry Red Cloud, Lakota Elder, founded his 100 percent Native-American operated non-profit, Lakota Solar Enterprises (LSE), in 2006, and established the Red Cloud Renewable Energy Center in 2008. Henry was born and raised on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, home of the Oglala Lakota Nation, where living conditions are extremely difficult.

For more than a decade, Henry has devoted himself to developing his expertise with renewable energy applications that are environmentally sound, economically beneficial, and culturally appropriate. Today, Henry is a twenty-first century Lakota Warrior, bringing green technology and employment to Native American communities. He reminds tribes that they can live sustainably and shows them that by embracing clean, renewable energy applications there is a way to get back to a traditional relationship with Mother Earth.
