Today, we\u2019re honored to share something truly historic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Red Cloud Renewable has been awarded a $5.265 million partnership with the Bush Foundation<\/strong><\/a>\u2014a transformational investment that will bring real, lasting energy relief to families across the Pine Ridge Reservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through this partnership, we are launching the Wiconi Solar Initiative\u2014\u201cWiconi\u201d meaning life\u2014and this work is rooted in bringing meaningful, lasting change to our communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the next several years, we will deploy 100 Mobile Electricity Generating Appliances (MEGAs)<\/strong><\/a> across all nine districts of Pine Ridge. These innovative, plug-in solar systems are designed to lower energy costs, expand access to clean energy, and strengthen energy sovereignty for Lakota households. For many families, energy bills have been an ongoing burden. This initiative is expected to change that\u2014helping participating households save an average of $1,500 per year while building a more resilient and self-sufficient energy future.

This work is about more than energy\u2014it\u2019s about equity, dignity, and long-term resilience for Oglala Lakota households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ll be working closely with partners across Pine Ridge to connect households with this opportunity. Together, We Can Keep Pine Ridge Warm<\/strong>
When winter storms roll across the Black Hills, they do not arrive quietly. They sweep across the plains with fierce winds, snow, ice, and temperatures that cut deep into the land. Another winter storm has recently devastated the Pine Ridge Reservation, bringing bitter cold that will test homes and families across the community.
For many households here, winter means doing everything possible to keep the cold outside. It\u2019s common to see windows boarded up from the outside, while thick blankets are hung over them inside the home \u2014 layers meant to block the icy wind that slips through cracks and thin walls. Many homes on the reservation lack proper insulation and sealing, allowing precious heat to escape while the cold pushes its way in. Families are often forced to turn their heat up far higher than should be necessary just to stay warm.

But the people of Pine Ridge have always met hardship with strength and ingenuity.

This year, Red Cloud Renewable is working to stand beside the community in a powerful way. <\/strong>

In 2026, we aim to break every record we have ever set \u2014 not only by installing more solar energy systems for tribal members, but by dramatically expanding our home energy audit program across the reservation.
These audits help identify where warmth is escaping and where small improvements can make a powerful difference. When combined with renewable energy, these efforts help lower energy bills while keeping homes warmer and safer through the harsh winter months.

Yesterday, January 25th 2026, Red Cloud Renewable celebrated 10 years as a 501(c)(3)<\/strong>
a decade of Indigenous-led innovation and community-powered impact.
Here are ten milestones from the past decade, captured in photos, that celebrate Native
leadership in renewable energy, workforce training, sustainable housing, and weatherization,
made possible by supporters and community members like you and grounded in sovereignty, sustainability, and self determination.

On January 25, 2016<\/strong>, Red Cloud Renewable officially became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, turning this Pine Ridge campus into the home base for a long-term, Native-led organization focused on energy sovereignty and community-centered climate solutions. That shift from individual projects to a lasting institution opened the door to new grants, partnerships, and supporters who still power the work happening on this land today.

On June 24, 2016,<\/strong> Red Cloud Renewable completed a solar-powered compressed earth block home for Wahacanka Paul Shields and his family on the Pine Ridge Reservation. With earth-based walls, solar radiant floor heat, a solar air furnace, and rooftop solar, the home, built with your support, shows how Native-designed, renewable energy housing can answer the ongoing housing crisis in Native communities.

In April 2018,<\/strong> founder Henry Red Cloud was named an Oceti Sakowin Solve Fellow through MIT Solve for advancing energy independence in Native communities. This recognition placed Red Cloud Renewable\u2019s community-powered solar work on a global stage, affirming Indigenous innovation as essential to solving climate and energy challenges and expanding our credibility, partnerships, and reach.

In June 2019,<\/strong> Red Cloud Renewable launched its first formal solar training initiative, turning community installs like this one into hands-on classrooms for Native learners. As programs like T4 (Train the Trainer) evolved into today\u2019s Solar Pre-Apprenticeship Readiness Program, each graduating class helps build a pathway to long-term solar careers and clean energy in Native communities.

In February 2020,<\/strong> Washington College awarded founder Henry Red Cloud an Honorary Doctor of Public Service for decades of advocacy rooted in Indigenous values and renewable energy. This national recognition elevated Red Cloud Renewable\u2019s voice in academic, policy, and philanthropic circles, strengthening our ability to advance Native-led climate justice and sustainability.

On July 8, 2022<\/strong>, Red Cloud Renewable received a $1.65 million U.S. Department of Energy Weatherization Assistance Program grant for the Native to Native Energy Sovereignty project, expanding our capacity to deliver deep energy retrofits for Indigenous households. Shown here, our weatherization crew and their director turn that support into culturally grounded, technical energy solutions that strengthen home energy security across Native communities.

On October 24, 2023,<\/strong> Red Cloud Renewable was featured on PBS\u2019s Native America for our leadership in climate-resilient building and renewable energy on Pine Ridge. The broadcast carried community stories to a national audience, lifting up Indigenous responses to housing, energy, and environmental challenges and strengthening public awareness of Native innovation and resilience.

In June 2024<\/strong>, Red Cloud Renewable launched its first all-women BRIDGE training program, ( Bridging Renewable Industry Divides in Gender Equality) bringing Native women from across the country together for hands-on solar education. By pairing technical skills with job readiness, leadership development, and national recruitment, BRIDGE helps close gender gaps in the trades and grows a more inclusive, Indigenous-led clean energy workforce.

On April 22, 2025,<\/strong> Red Cloud Renewable hosted our first annual Earth Day Wacipi at the powwow grounds on Pine Ridge, bringing community together in song, dance, and prayer to honor Un\u010d\u00ed Maka and future generations. By weaving cultural celebration together with our climate work, the Wacipi shows that sustainability is rooted in relationship to land and community and lifts up our role as both service provider and community convener, made possible through your support.

In October 2025,<\/strong> Red Cloud Renewable hosted its first Native to Native Energy Sovereignty Training focused on weatherization at our Pine Ridge campus. Over five days, students from several tribal nations, like the trainees shown here, learned hands-on home energy efficiency and tribal program design skills, transforming lessons from a federal weatherization grant into community-ready tools and shared Indigenous leadership for energy sovereignty.

Dear friends, I\u2019m honored to share some beautiful news from Pine Ridge.
Our Founder and Executive Director, Chief Henry Red Cloud<\/strong>, has been named the
2026 recipient of the Dr. Espanola Jackson Energy Justice Award from Vote Solar,<\/strong>
a national honor that recognizes leaders of color devoted to environmental and energy justice.
This recognition is deeply humbling for him.
For Henry, the work has always been about our Elders and our children here on the Pine Ridge Reservation. He carries the stories of families who have faced winters afraid the heat will be shut off or that the next utility bill will be more than they can manage.
That is why every solar installer training at Red Cloud Renewable ends with a community install for a family in need.
When solar goes onto a home, it brings warmth, safety, and a little more peace of mind to people who have carried too heavy a burden for too long.
This award also speaks to Henry\u2019s lifelong commitment to energy sovereignty.
Reservations are called sovereign nations, yet many Native families still live at the mercy of outside utilities and rising energy costs.
From the beginning, his vision has been to return real power to Indigenous communities, so Native nations can shape their own energy future.
Through Red Cloud Renewable, he has welcomed Native learners from many tribal nations, trained them in solar and clean energy, and sent them home with skills that bring jobs, opportunity, and affordable power to their own people.
None of this has happened alone.

As we close out 2025, we\u2019re taking a moment to reflect on what this year truly meant. Not just the programs completed or the milestones reached\u2014but the people <\/em>behind every success. Every home made safer, every utility bill lowered, and every student stepping into a new career happened because our community believed<\/em> in Native-led solutions. 30<\/strong> HOMES WEATHERIZED<\/strong>   In 2025, we completed deep energy retrofits on 30 homes on the Pine Ridge Reservation, making life warmer and more affordable for 104 people. Our deep energy retrofits rebuild a home\u2019s \u201cenergy system\u201d adding insulation, sealing drafts, improving heat and replacing major appliances like furnaces, water heaters, and fridges with high-efficiency models.<\/td>10<\/strong> SOLAR INSTALLS<\/strong>   In 2025, we completed full solar installations on 10 homes on the Pine Ridge Reservation, bringing clean, reliable power to an average of 5 people in each household. Our solar projects turn rooftops into community power plants reducing power bills, increasing energy independence, and keeping critical appliances running even when the grid is unstable.<\/td>34<\/strong> SOLAR GRADUATES<\/strong>   In 2025, 34 Native American students graduated from our solar education programs on the Pine Ridge Reservation, whether through BRIDGE or Solar Pre-ARP. These graduates leave with real-world installation skills, safety training, and industry connections, so they can step into the clean energy workforce and bring opportunity home to their communities.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Behind Every Number Is a Person   On Pine Ridge, winter is never just a season \u2014 it\u2019s a test of what a home can hold.   When we met Kate, she didn\u2019t begin with what she needed. She began with what she gives. Just outside her home sits a small shed she\u2019s turned into a place of care \u2014 a quiet clothing and supply giveaway she runs for her community. Inside were baby clothes, winter coats, and everyday essentials, saved carefully for young parents and mothers who might need them. Nothing flashy. Nothing announced. Just there, waiting.   Inside her home, Kate showed us a star quilt she was sewing for her grandchildren. Each stitch was steady and patient, meant to last \u2014 the kind of work you do when you\u2019re thinking about the future, not just today.   In 2025, because of donor support and a Department of Energy grant, Red Cloud Renewable completed a deep energy retrofit and full solar installation on Kate\u2019s home. Together, these upgrades will cut her energy costs nearly in half<\/em><\/strong> and help ensure her home stays warm, stable, and affordable for years to come.   For elders like Kate, energy security isn\u2019t about numbers on a bill. This Giving Tuesday, we want to share a story that represents everything Red Cloud Renewable stands for \u2014 and everything your generosity makes possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Pine Ridge Reservation, where opportunities are scarce and good jobs are even scarcer, a young Lakota woman named Keva was searching for a way forward. She filled out application after application, hoping to build a life close to home, close to her family, close to her people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then one day, she saw an ad for our BRIDGE Program \u2014 a solar training program created specifically for Native American women. She took a leap of faith. And it changed everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From day one, Keva felt what it meant to be truly supported: meals covered, childcare covered, gas vouchers, lodging, tools \u2014 all the things that make opportunity possible for Native women who are often carrying more than their share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But something even more powerful happened. Keva didn\u2019t just learn solar. She found her voice. She found direction. She found a future she could claim with both hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After graduating, she traveled the country installing solar \u2014 Oregon one week, Arizona the next. She saw Mount Shasta, the Redwoods, Lake Tahoe, Hoover Dam\u2026 and she said it felt like the best road trip of her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then she came home. Not because she ran out of opportunities \u2014 but because she wanted to bring opportunity back to Pine Ridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Keva is part of our Sustainable Building Crew, helping construct energy-efficient homes built by Native hands, for Native families. She still talks about one homeowner who stood on-site watching his foundation being poured, already imagining what each room would become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s when I knew,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re not just building a home \u2014 we\u2019re building a legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winters in South Dakota are unforgiving. Temperatures can plunge far below zero, and the wind sweeps across the plains with a force that seeps through the walls of homes not built to withstand it.
On reservations like Pine Ridge \u2014 and countless others across the country \u2014 too many families face these brutal months with little insulation, old windows, and furnaces that barely hold on. The result is not just discomfort, but danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s why Red Cloud Renewable launched its first-ever Energy Sovereignty Training \u2014 a program rooted in the belief that no one should have to choose between freezing and affording heat. This initiative trains tribal members to perform critical weatherization work: sealing homes, improving insulation, replacing inefficient systems, and teaching energy-saving practices that make homes safer, warmer, and more affordable to maintain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the impact reaches far beyond the homes themselves. Each participant is gaining certifications, career-ready skills, and the confidence to build a better future \u2014 not only for their own families, but for their entire community. They are becoming the next generation of energy warriors, leading the way toward a future where Native communities control their own comfort, cost, and climate resilience.

    it\u2019s about recognizing it fully and celebrating those who carry that legacy forward.

    From Land Sovereignty to Energy Sovereignty<\/strong>
    For the Oglala Lakota, the story of resilience is deeply tied to the name Red Cloud.
    In the 19th century, Chief Mahpiya Luta \u2014 known to history as Chief Red Cloud \u2014
    led his people through one of the most defining chapters in Lakota history.
    A fierce defender of his homeland, Red Cloud fought against the expansion of the Bozeman Trail through sacred Lakota territory, protecting his people\u2019s way of life.

    His leadership ultimately forced the U.S. government to sign the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868,<\/strong>
    making him one of the only Native leaders to win a war against the U.S.
    Army and secure peace on his terms.
    But even with that victory, the decades that followed brought unimaginable challenges.

    Broken treaties<\/strong>, the reservation system, and forced assimilation policies stripped
    Native Nations of their land, resources, and self-sufficiency.
    Communities that had lived in balance with the earth for thousands of years
    were made dependent on outside systems for survival \u2014
    from food and housing to water and power.
    That loss of sovereignty didn\u2019t just happen through land \u2014 it extended to energy,
    economy and opportunity.
    Generations later, many reservations, including Pine Ridge,
    would be left in energy poverty \u2014 where high utility costs, aging infrastructure
    and unreliable power made it nearly impossible for families to live sustainably.
    And that\u2019s where Chief Henry Red Cloud stepped in.

    A New Kind of Sovereignty<\/strong>
    As the fifth-generation direct descendant of Mahpiya Luta, Chief Henry Red Cloud carries forward the same mission his ancestor once fought for \u2014 but in a modern form: energy sovereignty. Through his leadership of Red Cloud Renewable, Henry has spent decades helping Native communities regain control over their power \u2014 literally and figuratively.     The Next Generation of Leadership<\/strong>
    That legacy now continues through Henry\u2019s son, John Red Cloud, who serves as Director of Operations at Red Cloud Renewable. John represents the next generation of leadership \u2014 one that bridges traditional knowledge with innovation, ensuring that the work started by his ancestors continues to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Carrying that same fire forward are Silas Red Cloud and Jack Red Cloud, both full-time Solar Educators at Red Cloud Renewable.
    Silas, Henry\u2019s son, has completed multiple solar certifications of his own and now dedicates his time to teaching new cohorts of students \u2014 helping them gain the skills to bring sustainable power back to their own communities.
    Jack, Henry\u2019s nephew, shares that same mission \u2014 mentoring students, leading hands-on solar installations, and helping ensure that energy knowledge stays in Indigenous hands. Together,
    the Red Clouds are not only preserving their family\u2019s legacy \u2014 they\u2019re multiplying it.
    Their collective leadership shows that energy independence is cultural resilience in action.

    This week marks the conclusion of our annual Spring Tree Planting Initiative here at Red Cloud Renewable.
    Every year, we roll up our sleeves and get to work planting hundreds of trees across the Pine Ridge Reservation\u2014adding up to thousands of trees over the years. These aren\u2019t just trees. They\u2019re windbreaks for homes, barriers against erosion, shade for elders, and life-giving protectors of Un\u010di Makh\u00e1 (Grandmother Earth).
    Why does it matter so much?
    One tree can absorb nearly 50 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
    Trees help cool the land and purify the air in areas facing worsening climate impacts.
    They restore soil, reduce flooding, and bring back native wildlife.
    On reservations like Pine Ridge, where environmental injustice runs deep, tree planting is a form of healing and sovereignty.
    We’re not done. We’re just getting started. But this work takes resources\u2014seeds, tools, trucks, fuel, and helping hands.
